PSLLE Maths `07/ 7:51 PM
Tuesday, October 23, 2007

Heehee, I just heard the news that the maths paper was a total killer (that's according to Ulanda and other PSLE students. It was also mentioned that some students broke down and cried outside the examination room. Parents and some other teachers also wrote in their comments. The Sunday Times finally posted the long-awaited PSLE questions that were labelled 'tough' by students. Too my surprise, they were all basic concept questions that clearly test the baiscs of the three topics: ratio, fraction and volume. My conclusion is either the students did not understand, were to nervous to think, or the teachers did not go through this kind of questions with them or did not clear up the basic concepts of each topics. It could be any of the reasons, but I guess nobody is really at fault. I completed all the questions in 15 minutes.

The first questions:

Shop A has 156kg of rice. Shop B has 72kg of rice. After both shops sold an equal amount of rice, the ratio of rice that Shop A has to Shop B is 4:1. Find the amount of rice sold by the shops. (3 marks)

comment: This question truly test on the student's foundation in ratio. Whether you can interpret the information given into units and model diagram to solve the question.

The second question

6/14 of the chairs in a hall are in rows of 13. Half of the chairs are in rows of 7. There are 112 more chairs in rows of 7. The rest of the chairs are stacked up. find the total number of chairs. ( 5 marks)

The third question: Tank A is filled with water to its brim. Water is then poured from Tank A to Tank B until both share the same heinght. What is this height. (4 marks )
